Welcome to St Paul Institute of Education, Phesama
From the beginning of their educational endeavour in Nagaland, the Jesuits have felt the need to have good and qualified teachers. This is specially so at the primary stage. Thus, a bold step was taken against all odds to start a Teacher Training Institute. St. Paul Institute of Education was established in 1977 in order to prepare professionally qualified primary school teachers to work in North East India in general and Nagaland in particular. This Institute was the second Teacher Training Institute in the state of Nagaland and till 2006 the only private run Institute existing in the state.
St Paul Institute of Education is affiliated to the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT)/State Board of Teacher Education (SBTE), Nagaland. It is also recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Government of India.
The Institute offers two-year Pre-Service Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed). The Course and other programmes offered by St. Paul Institute are completely residential. This makes it possible for the
trainees to be fully immersed in the training process so that they can derive as much benefit as possible.
Located on a spacious campus, the Institute has all the facilities required for academic excellence,
physical exercise and other co-curricular activities. It has spacious lecture halls, auditorium, prayer hall, well stocked library, audio-visual, computer, indoor games facilities and playgrounds. The Institute is indebted to St Paul School for sharing its resources. The Institute aims at the integral development of the trainees. Hence, the Institute gives special importance to personality development, physical development, spiritual formation and development of language skills.
For language development, speech drills, phonetic drills, loud reading, literary activities like public
speaking, quiz, composition, debating, story narration and other related activities are conducted periodically.
For the spiritual development daily prayers, recollections and retreats are organized on a regular
basis.
Daily sports and games, work experience and gardening help students to be physically fit, develop
their varied talents and nourish their hobbies.
For personality and for broadening the horizons of the students, seminars, workshops, talks, visits to
children’s home and educational tours are organized on a regular basis.
The institute gives special attention also to communication skills and leadership qualities which are
required for teachers.
There are a total of 9960 books and a number of magazines and journals in the library were the
trainees can immerse themselves into a world of knowledge.
The Institute is offering shelter for and forming candidates coming not only from Nagaland but also
from different regions of the Northeast and the rest of the country belonging to different tribes and
communities. Living in close interaction with each other helps them to appreciate each other and their
culture and way of life. The institute provides the facility for the students to learn folk dances of various
tribes and communities which help the students to appreciate the rich culture of the state and the country.

In order to provide accommodation to all the trainees, there are separate well-furnished hostels for
men and women with a common mess for all the trainees.
True to its vision the Institute sets before the students the ideals of excellent in learning and selfless
service. It seeks to equip them with the knowledge and skills required in teachers who will commit
themselves to the social, intellectual, spiritual and personal transformation of the children they will teach.
